On September 25, the AICPA announced the following upcoming changes to the CPA exam.

Effective January 1, 2011 the new CPA exam, called computer based testing-evolution (CBT-e) will launch. The CBT-e is applies enhanced technology so the look and feel of the exam will likely change. Please note that the AICPA will issue a new tutorial and sample tests in the fall of 2010.

In addition, there will be a new structure, content, and format to the CPA exam. The changes are extensive.

The content changes will be driven by the new Content and Skill Specification Outlines (CSOs/SSOs). These new CSOs/SSOs are available for viewing at www.cpa-exam.org. In addition to other content changes, please note that International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) will be tested on the CPA exam after January 1, 2011. Also, the new FASB codification will be tested on the exam after January 1, 2011.

The structure and format changes effective January 1, 2011 include a change in the research task format that will use this new authoritative literature (FASB codification). The testing of written communication skills will move from REG, FAR, and AUD to BEC. REG, FAR, and AUD will contain six or seven task-based simulations.

Please be confident that Kaplan CPA Review is ready to implement the necessary changes at the appropriate time. For most of you, these changes will not matter since you will have long passed all four sections by January 1, 2011.
