Choosing the right specialization for the final level of your CFA journey is an important choice. Beginning in 2025, CFA Institute shifted from a universal curriculum to specialized pathways for Level III. While the core material remains consistent across all specializations, your choice of pathway allows you to tailor your expertise to your specific career goals.
The CFA Portfolio Management Pathway is one of three distinct pathways CFA Level III candidates can select when registering to sit for the Level III exam. The Portfolio Management Pathway is often viewed as the "legacy" route, focusing on the advanced, public-market-driven strategies that have traditionally defined the CFA Program.
The Level III exam is divided into two distinct sections. Every candidate, regardless of their specialization, must master the core curriculum, which accounts for 65% to 70% of the total exam weight. The remaining 30% to 35% is dedicated specifically to your chosen pathway.
The core curriculum topics are shared amongst all CFA Level III specialized pathways are:
Asset allocation
Portfolio construction
Performance measurement
Derivatives and risk management
Ethics
The curriculum content specific to the Portfolio Management Pathway is:
Index-based equity strategies
Active equity investing: strategies
Active equity investing: portfolio construction
Liability driven and index based fixed income strategies
Fixed-income active management: yield curve strategies
Fixed-income active management: credit strategies
Case study in portfolio management: institutional
Trade strategy and execution
To succeed in this pathway, candidates must demonstrate high-level proficiency in several technical areas. Based on the latest learning outcome statements, some examples of what you should be able to do are:
Understand the nuances of index-based equity strategies and potential causes of tracking error.
Evaluate bottom-up, top-down, and activist strategies, as well as those based on statistical arbitrage.
Evaluate strategies for single and multiple liabilities, and select appropriate portfolio positioning under various interest rate scenarios.
Develop strategies based on expected changes in the level, slope, and shape of the yield curve.
Discuss the use of credit default swap (CDS) strategies in active fixed-income management.
Recommend and justify trading strategies based on motivations to trade and specific benchmarks.
Critique a firm's trading procedures and record-keeping with respect to good governance.
Analyze asset allocation in relation to liquidity needs and demonstrate the use of derivative overlays in tactical asset allocation.
The Portfolio Management Pathway is the best choice for CFA candidates who want to pursue a career in specializing in portfolio management and want to demonstrate their commitment to this area of investment management. Although you must stick with your choice of which Specialized Pathway to pursue after registering for the Level III exam, there are ongoing discussions about allowing CFA charterholders to add additional specializations through continued education after becoming a CFA Institute member.
This is the most established and historically grounded pathway for CFA Level III candidates.
It’s ideal for those pursuing careers in traditional asset management.
Once you register for the Portfolio Management Pathway, you cannot change it for that exam window.
If your career is strictly focused on Private Equity or Private Wealth, the public market focus of this pathway might feel less direct than the other specialized options.
The difficulty of the Portfolio Management Pathway is subjective and largely depends on your background. This Portfolio Management Pathway contains three fixed-income readings which can be challenging for many candidates:
liability-driven investing
yield curve strategies
credit strategies.
Because approximately two-thirds of the curriculum is shared across all pathways, all pathways are considered equally challenging. A significant portion of the difficulty of the Level III exam stems from the constructed response format, where you must justify your recommendations rather than simply selecting a multiple-choice option.
Your CFA designation does not change based on the pathway you pursue. Whether you choose Portfolio Management, Private Markets, or Private Wealth, you earn the same charter. However, you can highlight your specialization on your resume or LinkedIn profile to demonstrate your commitment to a specific area of investment management.
